The control device includes a hydraulic servo mechanism for a friction locking element to set a predetermined torque capacity. A first pressure regulating device controls the oil pressure on the hydraulic servo mechanism for the transmission and a second pressure regulator controls the oil pressure for the hydraulic servo mechanism for the friction locking element. A magnetic valve emits a signal pressure to control the two regulating devices whereby the torque capacity of the friction locking element is less than that of the continuously variable transmission which is based on a control pressure controlled by the first pressure regulating device.
