PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a curable resin composition which forms a low temperature curable coating film excellent in the acid resistance, excoriation resistance, yellowing resistance and appearance and to provide a method for forming a coating film using the composition. SOLUTION: The composition comprises 10-70 pts. of an acryl polycarboxylic acid resin obtained by containing, as a polymerization component, at least a carboxyl group-containing low-lactone modified hydroxy (meth)acrylic ester composition wherein the ratio of a monomer having 2 or more lactone chains (n>=2) is less than 50% and which is represented by the formula [wherein R, R1, R2 and R3 are independently H or methyl group; (j) is an integer of 2-6; R4 and R5 of each xn pieces are independently H or a 1-12C alkyl group; (x) is 4-7; (n) is 0 or an integer of 1 or above, the average value of (n) in the composition is 0.3 or more and less than 1; R6 is a residue of carboxylic acid; (m) is an integer of 1-3] and 10-80 pts. polyepoxide.
