PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a skin whitening external preparation with excellent skin whitening effect and a melanogenesis inhibitor with excellent melanogenegsis inhibition. SOLUTION: This skin whitening external preparation contains more than one or two withanolides having withanolide skeleton formula 1, especially having =O at position C-1, double bond between C-2 and C-3, -OH at C-4, as its base structure. This melanogenesis inhibitor includes the withanolides.
