The invention concerns a device providing, by means of one single miniaturised (pocket-size) apparatus, knowledge concerning the whole set of currencies used in the world, hence enabling detection of counterfeit or forgery using a microprocessor or an micro-programmed module integrated in the housing of the apparatus. Additionally to the microprocessor, the device comprises a EEPROM technology storage enabling downloading of values of spectral signatures of original banknotes and lists prohibiting current counterfeit banknotes on the site where the apparatus is being used. The device is provided with a colorimeter enabling it to identify the dominant colour of the banknote to be controlled and to automatically identify the denomination to be controlled in the currency concerned.
