Method and electrical system for power efficient vehicle battery charging with generator operating at full power when charging

The output of a three phase combined starter/generator (10) is converted to dc to charge a capacitor (34) above a voltage necessary to charge a vehicle battery (18). During this phase the generator output is at its maximum. A transistor switch (36) is then closed allowing the capacitor to discharge into the battery, the inverter having been switched off. When the capacitor charge drops to a minimum value the procedure is repeated.
