PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for easily and homogeneously dispersing a chromene compound having a large mol.wt. knows to exhibit a good photochromic characteristic in a polymer matrix in a high concentration. SOLUTION: This photochromic material comprises a molecular compound formed from a chromene compound having at least one substituted or unsubstituted phenyl group as a substituent, such as a compound represented by the general formula (1), with an aromatic compound such as toluene. For example, the photochromic material is dissolved in a monomer in a high concentration and then subjected to polymerization of the monomer to obtain the polymer matrix in which the chromene compound is homogeneously dispersed in a high concentration.
