Device for testing a mass flow meter has a pipeline with a flow disturbance element placed upstream of a flow meter to generate an irregular flow profile. The flow disturbance element is in the form of a plate (3) with a large number of openings (6a, 6b, 6c) across it. The number and arrangement of openings is dependent on the required flow profile. One or more openings can be inclined to the pipe axis to generate a swirling flow element or eddies in the flow. The pitch angle of the openings is set according to the amount of swirl or the eddy strength required.
