PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable telephone provided with a function for preventing the contents of a received mail and a transmitted mail from being respectively read by others and a function for releasing the function and a mail display controlling method. SOLUTION: A control system circuit 104 stores mails in a storage circuit 105 to manage the mails while dividing the mails between mails having lock and mails without lock according to a user designation, displays a list of the managed mails together with the states of the mails on a display 103 in response to a mail display request, and displays an input request for a personal identification number in response to a contents display request for the mails having lock which is made by selecting and designating the contents in the displayed list of mails on the display 103.
