PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic disk device capable of sharply shortening the contact time of a recording/reproducing element and a magnetic disk and to provide a method for controlling the device. SOLUTION: At the time of receiving a recording or reproducing instruction in/from a magnetic disk 3, a driving means 8 gradually narrows a distance between the recording/reproducing element 2 and the disk 3, and when a detection means detects contact between the element 2 and the disk 3, shifts the element 2 only a fixed distance in a direction of extending the distance. Since low floating quantity corresponding to high recording density can be realized independently of using environments such as the working dispersion of each magnetic head slider 1 and an atmospheric pressure difference and the contact time of the element 2 and the disk 3 can be sharply reduced, the occurrence of contact vibration and thermal asperity can be prevented, so that linear recording density can be increased, the capacity of the magnetic disk device can be increased and the size of the device can be reduced.
