A purification catalyst for removing hydrocarbons from a combustion gas containing methane and excess oxygen, which comprises zirconium oxide and iridium supported thereon; and a method of removing hydrocarbons from a combustion gas containing methane and excess oxygen which comprises using this catalyst.
