The method involves varying the wash program depending on degree of fouling of the washing medium and quantity and/or type of items to be washed. The degree of fouling of wash items is preselected by the user an the program controller determines the program automatically from the user specification and corrects the on-going washing process if appropriate depending on sensor signals for washing water cloudiness, rate of temperature rise and so on.
