PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a camera system constituted so that an external stroboscopic unit can be used even for the camera whose image pickup direction can be varied with respect to the camera main body, and the external stroboscopic unit can be effectively used in the case of attaching the external stroboscopic unit. SOLUTION: As for the camera system constituted of the camera main body 103, an image pickup unit 104 capable of changing the image pickup direction with respect to the camera main body103 and the external stroboscopic unit 106 which can be attached to the camera and whose irradiation angle is made variable, the camera system is provided with an image pickup direction detecting part 403 for detecting the image pickup direction of the image pickup unit 104, an irradiation angle detecting part 414 for detecting the irradiation angle of the external stroboscopic unit 106 and a control part 412 for controlling the irradiation range of the external stroboscopic unit 106 in accordance with the image pickup direction of the image pickup unit 104.
