PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device capable of reducing voltage to ground generated in DC cut-off capacitors and constituting an abnormality detecting circuit for detecting the abnormality in a discharge lamp of inexpensive components. SOLUTION: This discharge lamp lighting device is provided with a high frequency generating device 25 generating a high frequency power by turning on/off a DC power by switching elements 8 and 9, the multiple discharge lamps 16 and 17 connected in parallel to the high frequency generating device 25 respectively via current limiting ballast chokes 14a and 14b, multiple switch devices 20 connected in series to the discharge lamps 16 and 17 via the DC cut-off capacitors 13a and 13b, a switch opening/closing control circuit 23 opening the respective switch devices 20 with a prescribed time delay, and the abnormality detecting circuit 18 detecting the abnormality of the discharge lamps 16 and 17 based on the voltages of the DC cut-off capacitors 13a and 13b.
