A method of producing a metal salt of 2,4-oxazolidinedione of the general formula (III) wherein a 2-hydroxycarboxylate of the general formula (I), urea and a metal alkoxide of the formula (II) are reacted in an aromatic hydrocarbon; or a 2-hydroxycarboxylate of the general formula (I) and a metal alkoxide of the formula (II) are added to urea, and, then, they are reacted is provided: wherein, R1 and R2 each independently represent a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group, and R3 represents a lower alkyl group; <paragraph lvl="0"><in-line-formula>R4-OM (II) </in-line-formula>wherein, R4 represents a lower alkyl group, and M represents an alkali metal atom: and wherein, R1, R2 and M have the same meanings as described above; and also provided is a method of producing a 2,4-oxazolidinedione of the general formula (IV): wherein a metal salt of 2,4-oxazolidinedione of the general formula (III) is added to an aqueous solution of an acid.
