The pencil sharpener, and especially for oval cosmetic pencils, has a sharpening blade which can be moved laterally in relation to the pencil axis. The pencil (6) is held within a sleeve (11) formed by non-rotating mounting rings (12,13), to rotate around its axis, and the sharpening blade (4) is pressed to move laterally against the pencil. The pencil holding section has end walls (7,8) with circular recesses (9,10) to take the mounting rings, to move axially with the pencil without rotation.
