PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymerization catalyst having high polymerization activity and capable of producing conjugated diene polymer with a high content of cis-1,4-bond and slight amounts of gel and ash, and to provide a method of producing conjugated diene polymer having the above characteristics. SOLUTION: This conjugated diene polymerization catalyst comprises components (A) a transition metal compound such as a cobalt salt, (B) a metal compound of an element selected from the groups 1 to 3 elements and groups 11 to 13 elements of the periodic table such as trialkylaluminum, (C) an organic aluminum compound containing halogen such as alkylaluminumhalide, and (D) a compound having active hydrogen such as water, and is prepared by the steps (1) mixing the component (A) and the component (B) in an inert solvent and ageing the mixture, and (2) mixing the obtained aged liquid with the component (C) and the component (D).
