PURPOSE: An optical system for liquid crystal projector is provided to simplify configuration of the optical system and achieve improved luminance by obtaining color images by synchronizing first and second color switches with liquid crystal display elements. CONSTITUTION: An optical system comprises a light source for generating an optical beam, converting the optical beam into a single linearly polarized light and emitting the light; a polarizing separating prism(20) for permitting the linearly polarized light emitted from the light source to be incident to a reflection type liquid crystal panel, and the other linearly polarized light to be incident to a projection lens; first and second color switches(22,24) disposed in the optical path arranged between the polarizing separating prism and the reflection type liquid crystal panel, and which selectively converts the linearly polarized light in accordance with a bandpass and emits the light, wherein whether to apply power to the first and second color switches is determined by the unit color image formed at the liquid crystal panel; and a polarizing beam separating and polarizing unit(26) interposed between the second color switch and the liquid crystal panel, and which selectively reflects and polarizes the incident linearly polarized light in accordance with the polarizing direction. |
