A method e.g. for treating cyto- or histological specimens typically in an automatic stainer where the specimens are transported on a carrier to processing stations comprises treating the specimens using a selectable treatment programme and where automatic monitoring of the processing stations is carried out. The monitoring may be detecting the composition of the reagents used in the stations with respect to their working life or detection of the reagent volume present at the stations.
