PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To chemically convert a film excellent in corrosion preventability and adhesion of a coating film by treating a surface of a magnesium alloy with an aqueous solution having a composition containing no harmful hexavalent chromium. SOLUTION: This composition for chemically converting a magnesium alloy is composed of an acidic aqueous solution of phosphoric acid containing phosphoric acid, manganese ions, calcium ions and a vanadium compound, and the treating method uses the same. The magnesium alloy whose surface has been treated with the composition has the chemically converted film excellent in corrosion resistance on the surface and is also excellent in the adhesion and corrosion resistance of a coating film applied thereon.
