PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrophotographic photoreceptor for negative electrification having a surface layer which can maintain high charge holding (inhibiting) performance and enough electrification performance, can improve the sensitivity, reduce the optical memory to improve the image quality and has preferable hardness as a protective layer. SOLUTION: In the electrophotographic photoreceptor for negative electrification having at least an amorphous silicon (a-Si) photoconductive layer 103 and an amorphous (a-SiC) surface layer 104 containing silicon atoms and carbon atoms successively stacked in this order on a supporting body 101, the carbon atoms in the surface layer are inhomogeneously distributed in the stacking direction of the layers to produce the maximum in the distribution of the carbon atom content in the stacking direction of layers.
