<p>An apparatus comprises first imaging means (4) arranged along a passage (1), second imaging means (5), first image processing means (6) for processing the image of one side of an object taken by the first imaging means, second image processing means (7) for processing the image taken by the second imaging means, and means (10) for transferring data between the two image processing means. The first image processing means defines the area including the characters to be recognized, and sends the position information about the area to the second image processing means. The second imaging means takes an image of the same side of the object as the first imaging means did. The second image processing means processes information about the surface of the object based on the position information about the defined area.</p> |
