Laser beam (2a, 2b, 3a, 3b) is used to write on a multi-layer surface. The upper layer of the film is a protection layer (1) which is transparent to laser light. Beneath the protective layer are two metallic layers (4, 5) that are black and silver-white respectively. The upper black layer is readily ablated with low power laser radiation while the lower layer is only ablated using high power laser radiation. An Independent claim is made for a method for writing on a film using a laser beam. In the areas where only the top metallic layer is removed a remaining silver -white layer can be seen, while the remaining area is black or where the silver-white layer has been removed is the color of the contrast layer (7).
