PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing unit and an image processing method, that can obtain proper processing result with respect to entire gradations, in the case of processing that converts an input image with multi-gradation into an image having the number of gradations fewer than that of the input image. SOLUTION: When converting an input image with multi-gradation into an image with the number of gradations fewer than that of the input image, the image processing unit generates a parameter (candidate spread coefficient) for the processing, that converts the input image with multi-gradation into the image with the number of gradations fewer than that of the input image, depending on the feature of the input image with multi-gradation (105). Then the image processing unit obtains the evaluation value of an output image, that is the image with fewer number of gradations converted from the input image with multi-gradation (107), selects the spread coefficient on the basis of the evaluation (109) and sets the selected coefficient to a spread coefficient table 104.
