The shelf comprises a fixed part (50) sunken in the instrument panel (1) covered by a cover part (53). The cover part comprises a movable shelf component (55) which extends the fixed part when open. The shelf component is hinged on each side in its front and rear parts by first (56) and second (57) arms which pivot inside the instrument panel so that the cover remains horizontal within limits close to the contour of the instrument panel.
