PURPOSE: A starter motor is provided to prevent poor starting and to obtain a good engagement mechanism for inertia drive. CONSTITUTION: An electric starter for an internal combustion engine comprises: an electric motor(12) having a housing(18) and a rotatable armature shaft(14) having a helical spline portion(42); a pinion gear(48) mounted for selectively engaging a ring gear of the engine; a clutch assembly(40) for transmitting torque between the shaft and the pinion gear, equipped with a driving part and a driven part; and a solenoid(34) for holding the pinion gear engaged with the ring gear. The driving part having an internal helical spline portion engaging the helical spline portion of the shaft, and relative rotary movement between the shaft and the driving part creates axial movement of the clutch assembly along the shaft. The pinion gear is fixed for rotation with the driven part. The solenoid has a toroidal coil(36) and a tubular plunger(38) located around the shaft between the motor housing and clutch assembly. The tubular plunger has a radially extending flange at a first end arranged to be attracted towards the coil. |
