The support, such as a back pack, binder or photo album, has a substantial portion of its surface covered with a material (62) containing finely-divided particles and a binding agent incorporating a water-soluble material. The covering can be personalised with inscriptions or drawings in water-based, solvent-based or gel-based ink (64), applied with a pen (66). A binder cover can have, for example, an inner layer (58) of a rigid material covered with a fabric (60) and the material (62) to be decorated.
