Rechargeable battery comprises a zinc layer (4); an activated charcoal layer (6); an electrolytic layer between the zinc layer and the activated charcoal layer; and an electrical connection (20, 21) for charging the battery and for removing battery current connected to the activated charcoal layer. A catalyst consisting of an antimony alloy as crystalline powder in the gamma phase is mixed with the zinc layer. Preferred Features: A zinc-antimony gamma phase micropowder or a cadmium-antimony gamma phase micropowder is mixed as catalyst with the zinc layer. A nickel layer (5) consisting of a chemically inactive electrical conductor (7) is formed on a nickel hydroxide powder layer (8).
