<p>An electrostatic device (1) for the separation of particulate feedstock materials into two or more constituent streams. The device (1) includes at least one 'insulated' electrode (12), which is made up of an electrically conductive element (4) having an insulative covering (Fig. 2). The material is material is passed between a pair of oppositely charged insulated electrodes (12) to generate a separation. A typical application is for beneficiation of minerals such as the removal of silica sand from shell sand or limestone and the removal of silica sand from feldspar. The device users insulated electrodes (Fig. 2) so that the particles retain their charge on contact. The device can further incorporate a reciprocating action vibration generator to aid removal of material from the electrodes. Prior to passing the material between the eletrodes, the feedstock material may be changed by tribo-static action (3). A modular device with single or multiple separation chambers may be embodied, which incorporates a distributor (2) for initial separation of the feedstock material, and a recombining means (5) for recombining similar separator materials.</p> |
