PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a heat developable photosensitive material, superior in film characteristics of a coating film and sensitivity stability of an emulsion layer, because heat treating performance is enhanced and to enhance productivity in the production of the heat developable photosensitive material. SOLUTION: The surface temperature of a coating film after coating and drying is rapidly raised to a heat treatment temperature in the range of 60-100 deg.C, in a heating zone 52 in a heat treating apparatus 44. The surface temperature of the heated coating film is kept at the heat treatment temperature for 1-60 sec in a heat keeping zone 54. The surface temperature of the kept coating film is lowered from the heat treatment temperature to a temperature close to ordinary temperature by forced cooling in a cooling zone 56. By this three- stage treatment in a heat treating process, the surface of an emulsion layer will not peel in working, such as cutting, the objective heat developable photosensitive material which is superior in photographic performance is obtained, and productivity is increased.
