PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition for tire treads and a pneumatic tire capable of greatly improving a wet skid performance. SOLUTION: The rubber composition for tire treads is characterized by compounding (A) 100 pts.wt. of a rubber component containing a synthetic diene rubber or a mixture of a synthetic diene rubber and a natural rubber and containing at least 20 wt.% of a styrene-butadiene rubber, (B) 5 to 50 pts.wt. of clay, (C) 5 pts.wt. or more of silica having a nitrogen adsorption specific surface area of 100 to 300 m2/g and (D) 1 pts.wt. or more of carbon black having a nitrogen adsorption specific surface area of 70 to 300 m2/g in amount of 30 pts.wt. or more of (B) clay and (C) silica and in amount of 100 pts.wt. or less of (B) clay, (C) silica and (D) carbon black. The pneumatic tire uses the rubber composition.
