PURPOSE: Provided is a styrene polymer chelate adhesive for coating steel sheets, which is excellent in adhesive force and corrosion resistance and can be used in a broad pH range. CONSTITUTION: The styrene polymer chelate adhesive is produced by a process comprising the steps of: copolymerizing 4-acetoxystyrene and a copolymerizable monomer in the presence of a benzoyl peroxide initiator at 75-85deg.C; reacting the copolymer and formaldehyde and amine to produce a chelate comprising the copolymer of the 4-acetoxystyrene and the copolymerizable monomer or derivatives thereof represented by the formula (1); dissolving 0.1-10wt% of the chelate in an organic solvent. In the formula, A is OH or COOCH3, B is OH or NR, wherein R is H or alkyl, X and Y are selected from H and Z represented by the formula (2), wherein one of X and Y is Z and R1-R3 are H or alkyl, R4 is CR5R6CR7R8OR9, and R5-R9 are H or alkyl. The polymer chelate adhesive is applied to the steel sheets in a pH range of 2-11.
