PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an icebreaker of the type enhancing its ice-breaking performance without decreasing the efficiency of propulsion in general areas of the sea, and a method of breaking ice. SOLUTION: The icebreaker is provided with a forwardly projecting sponson having a downwardly inclined portion extending backward from its tip, on each side of the bow. A bulbous bow projecting forward below the surface of water and having an upwardly inclined portion extending backward from the upper surface of its tip is formed near the centerline of the hull of the icebreaker, so that the bow of the icebreaker is of the type such that the inclined portion of the sponson intersects the inclined portion of the bulbous bow on side view.
