PURPOSE: A system and a method for home shopping using a remote control are provided to make a user instantly order articles by using a remote control by loading a smart card in the remote control while watching a home shopping program on a set top box. CONSTITUTION: The system comprises a digital set top box(310) and a remote control(600). The digital set top box includes a receiving unit(311), a digital audio/video processing unit(312), an AV(Audio Video) signal output unit(313), a common interface(315), a memory(317), and a remote control signal transmitting and receiving unit(316). The remote control includes a key input unit(610), an infrared ray communication unit(620), a code converting unit(630), a smart card reading/writing unit(690) for reading the data of a smart card storing subscriber information and payment verification information, a smart card interface(680) for exchanging data of a smart card, an alphabetic/graphic data processing unit(650) for signaling alphabetic/graphic data stored in a memory to display the data, a display unit(670), a control unit(640), and a memory(660).
