The shock absorber, designed to be fitted to the chassis (C) or body of a motor vehicle, consists of a hollow lengthwise member (1) fixed to the chassis parallel to its lengthwise axis and containing a second hollow component (2). The inner component has outer surface grooves engaging with ribs inside the outer member, and a transverse cut-out (24) forming a crumple zone. The outer member has a lateral flange (E) for spacers (T) connecting it to an opposite lengthwise member.
