[Class 51 (ii)] In a regenerative industrial furnace, such as a Siemens-Martin furnace, in which the furnace proper is mounted above a regenerator comprising separately-constructed gas and air or gas and air slag chambers, a reinforcing structure is provided between the oppositely-disposed external walls of the said chambers which also constitutes a support for the structure carrying the furnace. As shown, pillars 18, comprising vertical rolled steel joists interconnected by cross-members 22, are disposed at intervals in the gap 12 between the walls of the chambers 10 and 11, the upper crossmembers carrying longitudinal girders 19 on which the supporting beams 1 of the furnace are mounted by means of rollers 20. The beams 1 are also supported by columns 25. The gap 12 is sufficiently wide to allow access to the walls for repair purposes.</p> |
