PURPOSE: A TN and STN liquid crystal display is provided to improve the reliability of the operating voltage on temperature and to shorten the reaction time at a low temperature. CONSTITUTION: Twisted nematic or supertwisted nematic liquid crystal displays in which liquid crystal mixture contains at least one 4-(4-alkenylcyclohexyl)-biphenyl derivative substituted in 4 position with 1-12C alkyl, alkoxy or alkenyl(optionally with 1 or 2 non-adjacent CH2 groups replaced by O, CH=CH, CO, OCO or COO). Twisted nematic or supertwisted nematic liquid crystal displays with two base plates(plus an edge) forming a cell, a nematic liquid crystal mixture with positive dielectric anisotropy(Δ e) in the cell, electrode layers with orientation layers on inside of base plates, an angle of 0-30 degrees between base plates and long axis of molecules on the surface, a liquid crystal mixture twist angle of 22.5-600 degrees from orientation layer to orientation layer and a nematic liquid crystal mixture containing 15-80wt.% liquid crystal compound with Δ e value of more than +1.5, 20-85wt.% compound with a Δ e of -1.5 to +1.5, 0-20wt.% compound with a DELTA e of less than -1.5, and optionally optically active component in amounts such that the ratio between layer thickness and the natural pitch of the chiral liquid crystal mixture is 0.2-1.3. |
