The air compressor management method has a fixed or variable operating priorty sequence used for switching in the different compressors, located in different carriages of the rail vehicle, in dependence on the actual compressed air requirement. Each successive compressor can be switched into operation by detecting a pressure drop along the main compressed air line to which all compressors are connected. An Independent claim for an air compressor management device for a rail vehicle is also included.
