PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely prevent the interference of an intake valve 1 and a piston while ensuring the maximum degree of freedom in changing and controlling the valve lift characteristic of the intake valve 1. SOLUTION: This variable valve system comprises an operating angle changing mechanism 10 capable of continuously changing an operating angle of the intake valve 1, and a phase changing mechanism 20 capable of continuously changing a center phase of the operating angle of the intake valve 1. An opening period of the intake valve is advanced most at a time of low rotation and intermediate load to determine a predetermined small operating angle, in the whole rotating zone.
