PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gasoline direct injection engine constituted so that ignition stability is prevented to be impaired. SOLUTION: This gasoline direct injection engine is equipped with a combustion chamber 1 formed between a cylinder head CH and a top part of a piston 5, a nozzle 2 for injecting fuel to the combustion chamber, a cavity 6 hollowly provided on the top part of the piston, an electrode 3 of an ignition plug located to face the cavity, and a protruding surface 7 formed around the cavity on the top surface of the piston. An inclining surface has a smaller angle than an angle of a ceiling surface of the combustion chamber with respect to a plane lying at right angles to a cylinder axis. Thus, the change of a space between the protruding surface and the ceiling surface of the combustion chamber can be moderated. Therefore, direct flow of swirl flow into the cavity is restrained and air-fuel mixture around the ignition plug is maintained. Thus, the ignition stability is prevented to be impaired.
