PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium suitable for heat assisted recording and to provide a magnetic recording apparatus using it. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium 100 is provided with a dielectric material layer 12, an information recording layer 13 and a heat controlling layer 14 on a substrate 11. The heat controlling layer 14 is composed of a material having high light reflectance and high thermal conductivity, e.g. Al or Al alloy, and is formed adjacently to the recording layer 13. When the magnetic recording medium 100 is irradiated with a laser beam, a desired temperature distribution can be stably formed in the recording layer 13. Thus, fine recording magnetic domains can to precisely formed in the recording layer 13. Therefore, the magnetic recording medium is most suitable as a magnetic recording medium for heat assisted recording. The generation of a zigzag pattern in a magnetization transition are is prevented by using an amorphous material for the magnetic layer. Thus, information can be reproduced in a high C/N ratio, and high density recording of 40 Gbit/inch2 (about 6.20 Gbits/cm2) or more can be realized.
