A system to detect a predetermined amount of a target organism is disclosed. A flow cytometer includes a laser (202), a flow cell (204) for passing a liquid analyte past a beam of light emitted from the laser (202), a first photodetector (210) generating a signal reflecting the peak intensity of light emitted from the analyte at a predetermined wavelength, a second photodetector (212) generating a signal reflecting the duration of emitting light and the size of material in the analyte, and a processor (218) to compare data from the first and second signals. The comparison involves a region R1 that has a minimum and maximum values for both the first and the second signals. A threshold level of counts detected in region R! is determined from a first background measurement. A comparison of a second measurement to the threshold value will determine if the threshold value is exceeded. |
