A vending machine is disclosed that is particularly suited to regular shaped items such as compact disks. Included are input means for selecting the item, payment means, a vending unit, and a control means linking the previous unit and means for determining that correct payment has been made for the item chosen, and allowing that item to be dispensed. In the vending unit, items are stacked vertically in a plurality of storage compartments, associated with a latch that can move to dispense the lowest item whilst preventing the next item from dropping until the latch returns to its original position. The items are stacked in such a way that a portion of the lower surface of an item extends beyond the upper surface of the item below. When the item to be dispensed is released by the latch, it drops into carriage movable in relation to the storage compartments that dispenses the item.
