A portable cellular phone system is capable of notifying a user of a portable cellular phone 16 of the presence of a voice message. The voice message to be fed to a user of the portable cellular phone 16 is sent out from a telephone 11 by a caller's manipulation of the telephone 11. The voice message sent out from the telephone 11 is transmitted through a dial-up line 12 and; when a location of the portable cellular phone 16 has not been registered (a connection with the portable cellular phone 16 is unable to be made), is transferred to a voice server 14 through a switching centre 13. When the location of the portable cellular phone 16 has been registered (a connection can be made), a voice message arrival notifying signal is sent out from the voice server 14 through the switching centre 13 and a base station 15 to the portable cellular phone 16. The portable cellular phone notifies its user of the receipt of the voice message notifying signal. The notifying signal is preferably communicated using a radio packet communication system. The notifying signal may contain information as to the identity of the caller for the voice message. |
