PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide thieno[3,2-b]pyridine-2-carboxylic acid and esters of the acid, and an easy effective method for manufacturing them. SOLUTION: An objective compound 1 is obtained by reacting a compound 3 with a thioglycollic acid ester. The hydrolysis of the compound 1 gives a carboxylic acid 2. In the formulae, R1 is a lower alkyl group, and R2 and R3 are each independently H or a lower alkyl group.
