PURPOSE: An alginic acid oligosaccharide and its preparation method are provided, to produce alginic acid oligosaccharide by the hydrolysis of seaweed not using an inorganic acid or salts but using an organic acid. CONSTITUTION: The alginic acid oligosaccharide is represented by the formula 1, wherein n is an integer of 1-10; n' is an integer of 1-10,000; and R is Na. An alginic acid oligosaccharide is prepared by drying, roasting and pulverizing a tangleweed and a brown seaweed to obtain alginic acid powder; adding distilled water to the powder and stirring it; adding an organic acid or its mixture to the solution to adjust the pH to be 4.5 at a temperature of 50-110 deg.C and reacting the mixture at the same temperature; and adding distilled water to the reaction mixture and carrying out the workup process. Preferably the organic acid is selected from the group consisting of citric acid, vitamin C, formic acid, trifluoroacetic acid, lactic acid, maleic acid, succinic acid, α-chlorosuccinic acid and α,β -dichlorosuccinic acid.
