PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust emission control method for an internal combustion engine allowing suppression of an SOx poisoning phenomenon of an NOx storage reduction type exhaust purifying catalyst and further improvement of a purification ratio of exhaust gas. SOLUTION: This method is characterized by adding sulfur component solidifying agent (stored within a solidifying agent tank 41) for solidifying sulfur component for intake air, mixed air or circulation exhaust gas before burned in a cylinder 3 of the internal combustion engine 1, solidifying sulfur component to cause generation of sulfur oxide after combustion of the internal combustion engine 1 and allowing exhaust gas after solidifying sulfur oxide to cause sulfur oxide to flow into the NOx storage reduction type exhaust purifying catalyst 39.
