PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify the assembly of a scanning exposure device which forms images of high accuracy and to reduce its manufacturing cost. SOLUTION: When the movement along a sub-scanning direction of an exposure heed is started, spacing correction data for one step component is read in and when the exposure head arrives at a corresponding movement position, a spacing regulation mechanism is activated in accordance with the spacing correction data to move the exposure head in a direction attaching and detaching to and from a rotary drum (steps 200 to 206). This operation is repeated at least within the exposure region of a printing plate, by which the spacing between the exposure head and the rotary drum is maintained constant and the out of focus of a light beam is prevented. As a result, even if the fabrication and assembly of parts are simplified, the formation of the images of high quality on the printing plate is made possible.
