An in-line compression server (24) is disposed between a user-agent (14) such as a web browser and a web server. The compression server (24) compresses requested objects in real-time and transmits them to the user-agent (14). The compression occurs according to a decompression capability of the user-agent (14), thereby reducing the waiting time for the user-agent (14).
