PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel front and rear-discriminating device which discriminates the front and rear of a planar body, such as an optical disk. SOLUTION: This front and rear discriminating device 110 is disposed on an electrophotographic printer which forms an image on a protective layer of a CD-R 50. The device discriminates whether the protective layer is set facing the upper side of a holding table 21, before the image is formed on the CD-R. When the CD-R is set abnormally, in a manner such that the protective layer faces the lower side, the light emitted from a light-emitting element 111 is reflected by the reflecting layer of the CD-R, and the reflected light thereof is received by a light-receiving element 112. When the CD-R has been set normally, the light reflected by the CD-R and will not be received at the light-receiving element. Therefore, when the light quantity which is larger than the prescribed quantity is detected in a light quantity detecting circuit connected to the light receiving element, that the CD-R can be discriminated as being set abnormally.
