A process for coloring, printing or painting of leather or synthetic leather substrates with a dispersion dye, comprises coating of the substrate surface with an aqueous dispersion of self cross-linking polymers; drying the applied dispersion; hardening of the self cross-linking polymer; and application of the dispersion dye onto the coated substrate surface. Preferably the (synthetic) leather substrates comprise leather fibers from recycled leather, leather clothing or leather shoes. An Independent claim is also included for the resulting colored, printed or painted leather substrates (I).
